In second grade, we will continue to close
in the gap from “invented spelling” to
conventional spelling. We will learn to
spell many words though memorization and we
will also learn to spell words be using
common patterns. Learning these spelling
patterns will give your child the foundation
needed to spell many words independently.
For example, if your child can spell the
word “name,” he or she can also spell “tame,
shame and blame.” These patterns will be
taught on Mondays and we will do Building
Word activities that will help your child
see the patterns in spelling. On Fridays,
there will be a bonus pattern word that was
not on the list. It will contain one of the
spelling patterns we’ve studied all week,
this skill will be expected to carry over to
other areas of the curriculum, as well.
