A.P. Chemistry

Welcome to AP Chemistry!  This is an advanced level course designed for students who seek advanced placement through the AP test and/or for students who seek preparation in handling college level materials and methods.  We will use a college level text and will emphasize those skills necessary for success in college including problem solving, calculator use, study skills and time management.

Student Responsibilities:

It is essential that you read and work sample problems from the text assignment before you come to class.  It is also essential that you keep up with assignments and prepare in advance for tests.   Since the intent of this course is to prepare you for college, you must accept responsibility for your own learning and manage your time wisely to ensure your success.  Each of you can and will be successful in this class if you utilize your ability and efforts to their greatest potential.

Grading:

The grades for this class will be weighted before they are recorded into the school records.  Grades of 70 to 100 will be weighted 15 points.  Failing grades will, of course, not be weighted.

Grades will be assigned by the following formula:

30% - Tests (Multiple Choice & Free Response) & Special Projects

30% - Lab Experience & Reports

30% - Homework Assignments, Journal Reports, Lab Abstracts, Quizzes (announced and unannounced) & Other Assignments

10% - Class Participation & Preparation

Laboratories:

The A.P. Chemistry course does not mandate a specific set of laboratories.  This year I will endeavor to incorporate computer based labs into the curriculum.  Please be patient as I gather the necessary materials and get the lab program started.

Semester Exams:

No AP Chemistry student may be exempt from the first semester exam.    The exam will be in multiple parts to simulate an AP exam.  (More explanation later.)

Students will be exempt from the second semester exam only if they take the AP Exam.  The second semester exam will be a project.  Details to be announced later.
