Class Policies – Mrs. Williams

Courtesy and Respect:

I have the rights to teach and students have the right to learn. Everyone, student and teacher alike, should be treated with courtesy and respect.

Class Rules:

  1. Have materials ready, be in seat and be quiet when bell rings.

  2. Follow directions – the FIRST time.

  3. Raise your hand to be recognized.

  4. Respect the rights, feelings, and property of others.

  5. Follow safety rules during lab activity periods.

  • Any action that may cause harm to you or others, acts of insubordination or any act that defaces school property will be cause for immediate removal to the principal’s office.

  • Students who disrupt class will be given one verbal warning. If the disruption continues, detention will be assigned and the parent will be notified. Detentions will be served with me after school and will be used as a lab or classroom cleanup, to make up missed work, or as a homework session. You have two days after earning the detention to either serve it or make special arrangements. Remember, detentions are earned, not assigned. If it will be a hardship for you, your parents, your team or your coach for you to serve detention, do not use disruptive behavior.

Participation Grades:

A participation grades will be given each six-weeks and will count as one test grade. This grade will be based on the following:

  • Being in class and seated on time

  • Having all materials in class

  • Following general school rules regarding gum and candy

  • Being prepared for class discussions

  • Properly keeping your notebook

  • Being on task (i.e. not sleeping, talking, doing other homework)

Each student will begin the six-weeks with a grade of 100. Points will be deducted for each infraction if the above criteria are not being met.

Work Turn-In

  • No spiral edges or red link are allowed on any assignment or test to be turned in.

  • Place assignments in the appropriate tray.

  • Assigned work will fall into two categories:

some homework will be accepted for full credit at any time before I leave school on the date it is due

some assignments will be due at the beginning of class and cannot be turned in any later for credit

  • No late work will be accepted (Be responsible! Turn in your work on time!)

Notebooks:

All students will be required to keep a notebook. Notebooks may be graded as a pop quiz, a daily grade, part of a test or as a part of the participation grade. Keeping a notebook can be important to you. For example, if you have a dispute with the grade that I have recorded and cannot provide the paper, the grade will stand as recorded.

Notebook Order – Your science notebook must be in class every day!

  1. Notes – keep a supply of paper in this section at all times.

  2. Daily work – homework, in-class worksheets, pop quizzes, etc.

  3. Labs - lab reports and write-ups, safety rules, lab drawings

  4. Tests – keep all tests – semester tests may be derived from the questions.

  5. Other

Grading:

6- Weeks and Semester Grades:

  • Daily Work Average – 50% 25% for semester test

  • Tests Average – 50% 25% for each six-weeks grade.

The two lowest daily grades will be dropped each 6-weeks.

NOTE – Occasionally I may make a special assignment such as a model, report or research paper. The value of these projects will be announced when the assignment is made.

ABSENCE:

  • If work was due when you were absent, turn the work in to the appropriate tray as soon as you return. Mark “absent” on the paper.

  • If you know in advance that you will be gone (as in an athletic of school trip), ask for the assignment before you leave.

  • Tests will be announced a minimum of two days in advance. No new information on the test topic will be covered the day before the test. Therefore, plan to take any test you miss on the day you return (except for long absence) and plan to take a test with the rest of the class if you were only absent one day before the scheduled date.
