1st Grade Math
We start each math lesson with the
calendar as a warm up activity. Calendar is a
student-led activity in first grade and the kids
love the opportunity to be the “teacher”. At
this time, we practice computation, problem
solving strategies, measurement, geometry, time,
patterns, fractions, graphs, and charts. We also
review information from the previous day’s
lesson. Before finishing calendar, we sing songs
and do chants. This provides a fun start to our
day.
Math homework is usually assigned four
nights a week. Side A of the paper is done in
class. Side B is essentially the same format.
The children quickly become comfortable with the
vocabulary on these papers and begin reading
their papers independently very soon. Please
encourage your child to read the paper on his or
her own. We review our math words daily and your
little one will be anxious to show off his or
her reading skills. When your child needs help,
point to the words and have him or her repeat
them after you read them. Please be sure to have
pencils, erasers, and crayons at home for use on
homework. It is always acceptable for you to
check a paper and guide your child in making
corrections on homework.
There are many skills that will need
extra practice to ensure mastery at the first
grade level. As we come to those skills, we will
supplement our regular math program, and
continue to review them as needed.
