1st Grade Spelling
Invented spelling, sound spelling and
phonetic spelling are all terms meaning the same
thing. These terms all describe the method of
spelling words based on “how they sound”, rather
than using conventional spelling rules. Research
has shown incented spelling to be a bridge to
formal spelling. Just as your child took small
steps in learning to walk and talk, he or she
will need to take those same steps in learning
to write and spell. Invented spelling is
acceptable in creative writing activities across
the curriculum in the first grade.
In an effort to help you child learn
conventional spelling, we will have spelling
tests each week. We will be teaching
conventional spelling patterns and phonics rules
and reviewing these concepts daily. A spelling
list will be sent home each Monday for your
child to study. The best way for first graders
to study is to write the words, saying each
letter as is it written. Tests will be given on
Friday mornings. The children will have numerous
opportunities to practice these words in class,
as they are words from our phonics reading
program. We encourage you to help your child go
over these words each evening at home as it will
improve your child’s reading skills as well as
conventional spelling skills.
