listen to a story about 7-10 minutes long and then answer 25 objective
questions about the reading.

This
60 minute contest covers spelling rules of the English language,
meanings and definitions, and root words.
We have a computer program to practice these skills.

Using
a Meriam Webster=s Intermediate Dictionary, students answer 40
objective and short-answer questions within 20 minute |

& Charts |
This
75 question, 45 minute test measures skills such as using a reference book
(atlas) to make comparisons, estimation, using scale, and interpreting
legends and keys.

Oral
Reading |
Students
prepare pieces of prose or poetry to read aloud (prose and poetry
alternate each year).

Impromptu
Speaking

From
a list of topics, students are given three minutes to prepare one speech
no longer than five minutes.

Modern

Students
prepare, memorize and give a speech that states both the pros and cons of
the topic and defends the point of view of the speaker. |

In
10 minutes, contestants answer as many mental math questions as possible. |
Calculator
Applications |
Using
a calculator, students answer as many problems as possible during the 30
minute time limit. |

Mathematics |
This
30 minute, multiple choice test covers math skills appropriate for the
grade level. |

Contestants
answer 35 multiple choice questions within 45 minutes on topics
appropriate to the grade level. |
Social
Studies |
Contestants
answer approximately 40 multiple choice questions within 30 minutes on
topics appropriate to the grade level.
